YOGA: MY RECENT ROUTINE CHANGES

September 30th 2008 04:18
For a couple of weeks, I have been restless, lazy and sinussy. This has led to less Yoga, and even when practicing, less of a positive result. A few days ago I began to concentrate on the matter of my sliding participation, and focus on a return to a devoted practice. I am serious about Yoga and want to get in deeper with my involvement, not fade away!

My first 'day back' from two or three weeks of half-heartedness resulted in my feeling as if it were the initial day lived all over again. My body was shaky and achy. My head was filled with the churning problems of life rather than a focused attention. Even so, it was beneficial both physically and spiritually to force myself back into regularity, after a sloppy fortnight

Different Styles: Bikram Yoga

September 16th 2008 02:11
Bikram Yoga is often called Hot Yoga. It involves practicing in a humid heated room. The temperature is generally set at a little over 40 degrees C, at 105 degrees F - with a humidity reading of 40%. A typical class will be 1.5 hours in duration and covers a range of 26 Asana sandwiched between two Pranayama practices. Bikram Yoga is currently popular worldwide, predominantly in the US, Europe and Tokyo. Classes are also available throughout Australia.

Bikram Yoga was first brought to the US in the 1970's. It was introduced by Bikram Choudhury, who currently teaches at Bikram's Yoga College of India in Los Angeles, which he himself developed. Formerly trained in Calcutta, US migrant Choudhury insists upon Yoga instructors progressing through a paid and certified training course prior to teaching his US copyrighted form of yoga

YOGA OPINION: Yoga for children

September 12th 2008 15:23
I have recently read many references concerning teaching yoga to children at various online sources. I must agree that it seems a very good idea. It was during TV Yoga classes that my mother indulged in that I had my first taste of Yoga - although I did not take it seriously at that time. Perhaps, had my mother encouraged me to practice properly rather than getting angry whilst trying to ignore my intrusions to her own practice, we may both have benefited at that time.

Luckily, the seeds of interest and acceptance had been sown during my childhood, though. Hopefully, my own son will likewise consider Yoga sometime in his future. He tried it a couple of times, and has since witnessed my regular and devoted practice. I even turned our former lounge/guest room into a Yoga room! Whilst he currently sighs, shakes his head and observes 'mother doing that eastern stuff again.' perhaps in time he will learn of its many values

Different Styles: Adhyatma Yoga

September 8th 2008 16:14
Adhyatma Yoga is another Yoga style issuing from the ancient texts, this time the Upanishads. The core theory is to use self realization generated from Adhyatma Yogic practices in order to integrate inner personal consciousness with Brahmic consciousness. The philosophy is based on non-duality, Advaita Vedanta, also present in the Bhagavad Gita.

This Yoga form is a metaphysical and spiritual style. In this form of Yoga practice, the student should concentrate on three areas. The paths of devotion, action or service, and knowledge are all important for practitioners. The teachings lead the practitioner to recognize their body and mind as clothing with the inner spirit as the important part. This encourages equinimity and spiritual freedom. Daily life and meditation are interconnected

Different Styles:Ati Yoga

September 4th 2008 15:45
The word Ati stands for supreme. Ati Yoga is something I had already heard about due to my Buddhism practice, long before researching Yoga styles to write about for Yogatap. I already knew it was connected with Dzogchen Buddhism, although not entirely certain what precisely it related to, prior to further investigation.

It appears to be a title for Dzogchen practice, also known as the Great Perfection, which in Sanskrit is called Mahasandhi. It is the third of the inner tantras of Dzogchen, which are Mind Section, Space Section and Instruction Section. It comprises the highest teachings within the Nyingma School of Buddhism. The Ati Yoga teachings were first given to Garab Dorje in Uddiyana, Western India. Well known masters include Garab Dorje, Manjushrimitra, and Padmasambhava
