Yogic contemplations

October 30th 2008 00:20
I have recently been considering purchasing a book and getting more involved with a specific style of Yoga. Until now, I have followed instruction from one manual, with alterations stemming from my personal situation, body, health, and other reading. However, I would like to select 'a' Yoga style to concentrate on and stick with.

I am still a long way from examining all the styles available, which I am attempting to do for the purpose of writing at this site, as well as personal interest. I am only currently researching the F-G section of the alphabet. Perhaps I should have attended the recent Sydney Yoga Expo - to locate some information and ideas, but I had some work to be done on that specific day

Yoga Styles: Dharana Yoga

October 28th 2008 03:50
Dharana Yoga is another meditation method involved in Patanjali's Yoga practices. It is stage six of Raja Yoga, or Ashtanga (AKA 8-limbed Yoga) practice. It refers to holding the mind fixed upon a specific, and therefore is a practice of concentration or attentive focus. It can be referred to as single-pointed concentration.

One can practice Dharana at any time, not only on the Yoga mat or in seated meditation. It is a meditative practice that can be slotted into everyday life; practice opportunities arising in moments such as making a bed, raking a lawn, sweeping the floor, or simply taking a walk. If you are doing your chores, you simply fix your mentation upon the chore. If you are walking, you concentrate single-pointedly on your movement, or on your environment. You merely need to focus on a specific and hold your attention there, rather than letting your mind wander, bounce, chase, or otherwise become distracted. If you prefer seated meditation, you can use an inanimate object as your focus, such as a candle flame, religious icon, or even a mark on the wall in front of you

Yoga Styles: Dru Yoga

October 24th 2008 16:06
The word dru comes from the Sanskrit word 'dhruva'. This word relates to the stillness experienced when practicing Dru Yoga. Practice enables the practitioner to abide within the stillness and step away from the busy happenings of life outside. One learns to locate an inner serenity, and therefore obtain mental and emotional clarity.

Dru Yoga is not just a meditational form of Yoga, however. Dru Yoga combines Asana sequences with Pranayama (breathing) practice, Mudras (hand gestures), visualizations, affirmations and relaxation, leading to an inner calmness. The sequences are said to flow, and include 'energy block releases'. Dru Yoga is often linked with the heart Chakra, and is therefore sometimes known as 'Yoga of the heart

Yoga Styles: Dhyâna-Yoga

October 22nd 2008 21:35
If following the Hindu Yoga system, or the 8-limbs of yoga system (AKA Patanjali's As(h)tanga), Dhyana Yoga is a meditation practice method involved. It refers to the level of meditation where awareness is of one's being, rather than the act of meditation. It is therefore a meditation practice, rather than a full Yoga lifestyle.

If following the Hindu Yoga system, you will find Dhyana mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, chapter 6. It is listed as a method for mind and sense control, assisting further meditation practices such as Samadhi. Reference is also made to Bhakti Yoga being a preferable practice in this chapter of the holy Hindu text. The overall aim of such Yoga practices being to connect with the inner divinity and transfer control from the other mind levels resulting in cessation of incorrect mental activities

Yoga Styles: Chair Yoga

October 21st 2008 00:37
Chair Yoga is a Yoga style that is - as the title suggests - practiced mainly whilst seated in a chair. Additional asana using the chair as support whilst standing are sometimes included. Chair Yoga can be beneficial to those unable to practice regular styles, such as the invalid, disabled or the elderly population. For this reason, it is often a class offered at senior centers or nursing homes as a valid form of exercise.

Some Yoga centers are also using Chair Yoga as an option to bring in members of the public that would not otherwise be able to benefit from attendance. Many instructors are taught to recognize various health problems and how to adapt Asanas to deal with these. Therefore classes tend to be suitable for individuals with specific problems

Yoga Styles: Cy-Yo

October 15th 2008 23:42
Cy-Yo is another modern Western form of Yoga practice that originated in the US and is action-based, rather than a complete Yogic lifestyle. It involves an hour long session, combining cycling and Yoga in a 'Yoga ten minute: Cycling forty minute: Yoga ten minute' ratio.

The object is to commence with a Yoga warm-up, energizing the muscles and joints. This is also said to activate the energy centers. Next, structured cycling occurs. Visualization, breathing and detoxification are a part of the process, before the final Yoga session offers an energy-focusing end to the session

Yoga Styles: Bharata Yoga

October 14th 2008 01:32
Bharata Yoga is one of the asana focused Yoga styles that was developed fairly recently. It was created by Gert van Leeuwen, an Amsterdam resident. The objective of Bharata Yoga is to obtain correct spinal alignment within the postures. This leads to assistance in dealing with tension and stress, as well as improving your flexibility, strength and overall posture.

Simple Yogic breathing is included in the typical routine, but there does not seem to be any further involvement with traditional Yogic practices and the emphasis remains on the physical rather than a spiritual or complete lifestyle. The postures are held for longer than in some Yoga styles, in order to concentrate on the correct breathing and spinal alignment

Different Styles:Buddhi/Bhakti Yoga

October 3rd 2008 16:35
Buddhi Yoga is a term meaning even-mindedness that stems from the Bhagavad Gita. Bhakti Yoga also stems from Hinduism, and refers to the encouraging of love and devotion for God. The word Bhaj translates into 'to be attached to God'. In some sources, both Buddhi and Bhakti Yoga refer to this same devotional meditation practice, whereas in other sources these are two separate yet similar practices.

Bhakti Yoga is predominantly a meditational practice, dealing with a divine love and devotion. Some sources name the deity Bhakti, others refer to the source as Lord Krishna. This is a practice to develop mental well-being and spiritual fulfillment
