Tibetan poses: The Diamond Wheel

January 30th 2009 19:52
Whilst only just starting to explore the world of Tibetan Heart Yoga, there are some interesting additional Asana that are incorporated into the 30-minute practice that I have come upon. The diamond wheel is one of these.

Sitting with crossed legs or in lotus, take your arms behind you and clasp your fingers, keeping your arms straight. As you exhale, twist to the left, letting your arms stay extended behind and pointing right. Your head should turn left also. Hold this pose for 5 full breaths before returning center for a complete breath, and then alternating L/R

Yoga Styles: Jnana Yoga

January 28th 2009 23:26
Jnana Yoga refers to the branch of Yogic study associated with knowledge. The word Jnana itself translates as knowledge, although it may also be said to refer to wisdom or insight. Jnana Yoga can also be described as meditative awareness targeted upon illuminative wisdom, and is also sometimes called Gyana Yoga.

From the Hindu influence, one learns to recognize the Brahman as oneself. In the Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna is reported to have said that Jnana consists of properly understanding the body and the soul - kshetra and kshetra-jna. Further into this Hindu holy text, Krishna announces that one must comprehend the difference between the two

The word Jivamukti translates as liberation while living. It was created in 1984 by David Life and Sharon Gannon in NYC. Jivamukti Yoga is a combination of Ashtanga Yoga practice with the teachings of Shri K Pattabhi Jois aimed at incorporating Yoga as a part of daily life.

Yoga Styles: Japa-Yoga

January 23rd 2009 19:18
Japa Yoga is one of the meditative practices that is a pathway to understanding and realization of one's own inner divinity or to that of a specific religious Lord. It may also be used as a part of Dhyana practice stemming from Patanjali's 8 limbs of Yoga, in which case the name fades and the meditation continues once concentration has been achieved.

The practice involves the repetition of a mantra or of the name of the deity, spoken either mentally or with a soft verbal tone. When one speaks the mantra internally, within one's mind, it is termed Manasika Japa. When whispered or spoken softly, it is termed Vaikhari Japa. Likhita Japa refers to the continual and repetitive writing of the mantra

Yoga Styles: Iyengar yoga

January 21st 2009 00:36
BKS Iyengar is the known creator of Iyengar Yoga, a style that uses various forms of props within its Asana based practice. Correct alignment is an essential and many corrections are made during a typical class to ensure that each student is practicing the correct form of each pose.

At least 200 postures have been included in Iyengar Yoga, along with fourteen forms of Pranayama. These have additional variations, bringing the total number to a larger figure. While Asana and Pranayama are strongly emphasized in class practice, the additional features of Patanjali's eight limbs of Yoga are also a part of a complete Iyengar practice

OUCH!

January 14th 2009 14:51
I took just two days break from Yoga practice - due to a stomach bug - and on the third day was completely wrecked physically. (This is probably just a continuation of the flu-like bug, rather than anything more serious.) When I came to Yoga practice, I was like a dead weight trying to move lumps of lead against their will.

My leg raises for example did not move to 90 degrees angle, but somewhere between 2 inches and a foot from the floor. I could not even get into shoulderstand, despite trying to cheat by rolling or side bending and then rolling
