Yoga Tap - February 2009

Yoga discussion - Kundalini Yoga

February 27th 2009 15:58
Kundalini Yoga is another area that I would personally like to investigate further. Over the past couple of years, I have become more than simply aware of an inner energy. I have developed a sensing of my inner body that ihas become more precise than that of my outer. I am not aware of each and every chakra in full, but I am getting there...

One of the very first things I noticed when I began to properly practice Yoga in 2006, was the effect of simple Pranayama practice on my health. One of the things that I have only just learned is the connection between breathing and health with the inner energies of the body

Yoga Styles: Kundalini Yoga

February 25th 2009 16:00
Kundalini refers to available pranic energy situated at the base of the spine that can be raised through the entire seven chakras. Enlightenment comes about when the prana arrives at the Crown Chakra. Kundalini Yoga is both physical and meditative.

Asana and Pranayama are combined in order to bring about the raising of the pranic energy. Kundalini practice uses Asana, Pranayama, mantra, mudra, and meditation

Yoga Styles: Kripalu Yoga

Kripalu Yoga combines Asana practice with meditation and Pranayama. Spirituality and inner awareness are also an important part of this yoga practice, which is separated into three stages:
* Learning the Asana and becoming aware of your individual body's strengths and weaknesses.
* Extending the duration of the completed postures and working on inner development, spiritual aspects, and concentration

Yoga Styles: Ki Yoga

February 20th 2009 17:11
KI is a translation of the word QI, or energy. Ki yoga may also be called the Yoga of meaning, because as you stretch and bend you learn why you are doing so. Each movement is explained in regard to the value of its physical, mental and spiritual benefit.

Ki Yoga can be seen as a melding of Indian yoga with Oriental healing. It was founded by Jack Marshall. Ki Yoga mixes the teaching techniques of Masahiro Oki, Andrzej Gospodarczyk, and Shizuto Masunaga. The four principles laid down by Masahiro Oki are belly strength, laughter & smiles, a mental positivity, and gratitude

Hmm.... must I?

February 18th 2009 17:45
I doubt that I am alone in having a few days every so often where I feel somewhat 'blargggghhhhhh' and therefore somewhat lazy about starting my Yoga routine. There are of course three options on how to deal with this feeling -

* ignore the feeling, get on with the Yoga, and feel GOOD

Yoga Styles: Kaula-Yoga

February 17th 2009 01:03
Kaula Yoga is an amalgamating discipline of Tantric Yoga from within Purva Kaula or Uttara Kaula traditions. It may also be termed Kula Yoga - Kula being translatable as self-contained group or family. It is based on the inner divinity within the practitioner that is shared with the entire world. In loser terms, it may simply refer to a group of spiritual practitioners.

Kaula Yoga deals with Tantric principles aimed at enabling one to attain enlightenment. Rituals, initiations, mantras, and tantric sex may all be involved to expand the consciousness and become aware of inner bliss. Drawing on the spiritual maturity and energy of other members within a group, group practice is common

Yoga Styles: Karma-Yoga/Karmic Yoga

February 13th 2009 20:44
Karma Yoga can also be called Buddhi Yoga, discipline of action, or Karmic Yoga. It stems from a summary contained within the Bhagavad-Gita, a well known Hindu scripture. A second Hindu text the Mahabharata contains Lord Krishna elaborating on several forms of Yoga practices and principles to aid his troubled friend's upcoming dilemma - Karma Yoga being one of these.

The basis of Karma Yoga involves carrying out ones duties without expectation of reward. One should learn to control mental desires, whilst performing necessary actions and obligations. To practice Karma Yoga, you offer selfless service, doing your duties with a sense of divine purpose and dedication and without the wish to gain wealth or power for their achievement. The overall emphasis is on activity without attachment to the outcome

Tibetan poses: The Rag Doll

February 6th 2009 21:39
I have previously done a very similar move to this as a part of a former (pre-Yoga) exercise routine I once invented. This version is not quite so strenuous as my own, and is much safer for the back and healthier for the breath!

Stand up straight with your feet together. Keeping your arms straight, extend them behind you and join your fingers. As you inhale, tilt backward from the heart/upper chest area gently pulling your shoulder blades in toward one another, leaving your lower back and waist straight, and tilting the head slightly until you are looking upward at the ceiling or sky above

Tibetan poses: The Arrow

February 3rd 2009 16:32
This Asana is a fun variation of the well-known lion pose that I personally find much easier on my back than the regular version, but it hurts my weak toe muscles if I have not exercised them very much lately. Maybe I should practice this pose a bit more often to keep my toes healthy!

Kneel with your feet touching one another behind you, toes resting on the floor, and knees a couple of feet apart. Rest your butt, so that you are sitting upon your heels. As you exhale, position your hands in front of you, slightly closer together than your knees but not touching and further forward than your knees. Your fingers should be gently splayed but facing the same direction as you. Twist from your heart region so that your back is mildly arched and your face now looks upward. Take five full breaths through your nostrils whilst gaping your mouth set open, jaws widely apart

Tibetan poses: The Hook

February 2nd 2009 03:11
This pose is difficult for me, as keeping my legs extended straight is not easy unless I am propped up by a wall behind me or have been seated with them extended for some time prior to moving the upper half of myself.

Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight in front of you. With bent elbows, clasp your hands together in front of your chest. As you exhale, make a direct movement to extend your arms straight in front of you, keeping the fingers entwined. In hale before continuing
