Yoga Tap - March 2009

The basic asana is performed by sitting with your legs out straight in front of you and hands behind you, fingers facing away from your body. Using your hands as support, lean backward and then raise your butt from the ground, pushing your hips up as high as you can. Your feet should become flat on the floor in this pose and your legs remain straight. Your head should drop back slightly.

Somewhat more within my own personal ability would be the range of shoulderstand variations. It is the only asana I seem to have fully mastered in the basic form - on occasion. Although I was far from able to envisage myself being able to perform the asana without support from my arms and hands, and therefore not expecting to be able to raise my arms straight by my sides in shoulderstand, several other variations appealed personally.

The lowering of one alternating straightened leg to the floor would seem to be the next step for me. The Eagle shoulderstand is another possibility. To perform this asana, bend slightly one leg at the knee whilst in shoulderstand. Take the other leg and cross legs at the thigh, with the foot bent underneath the opposing ankle. After holding the pose for a while, straighten the legs and repeat with opposite legs

Whilst I have yet to even manage to get into the basic headstand, the shoulderstand is one of my favorite Asana and I have naturally investigated a few leg position changes when in the position on my good days.

For some reason, each time I attempt to get into the headstand, I simply roll right over my hands and end up on my back. I therefore do not often bother trying this pose. However, if I ever do manage to not only get into the position, but perfect it enough to advance, I think the Lotus headstand would be my preference for the next step along

Searching and continuation

March 24th 2009 01:56
Recently, I have been searching for a specific brand of Yoga to follow. It is not that the two that I currently follow are lacking in any way, more that I seem led towards investigating further. This may be because I can not seem to take the Asanas any further yet want to get more involved with Yoga, or it might be that when other areas of my life fail and I have faith in Yoga I seek to step deeper in; maybe I am just naturally inclined toward a certain branch and have not yet discovered it.

With most people, continual application of Asana practice leads to a healthier fitter body. Yes, I too have benefited physically. However, each time I progress a little, I fall back again. Instead of being able to hold to a constant improvement with the occasional plateau, I seem to bounce from beginner to intermediate and then back to 'day one' stiffness

Yoga Styles: Mahâ-Yoga

March 20th 2009 15:36
The translation of the word maha is great or supreme. There are two formats of Yoga currently using the title Maha Yoga.

Maha Yoga is also known as Kundalini Shaktipat or Siddha Yoga, a spiritually based Yoga practice. It enables the practitioner to perform Yoga postures and kriyas unconsciously through Kundalini meditation. The basis is that the divine inner energies automatically take the practitioner through the Yoga experience when allowed free reign. One simply sits and allows the natural flow to occur, bringing about the relevant meditational aspects for the individual's progress. A guru is sought to open up the awareness of Kundalini and initiate the energy flow

Yoga Styles: Loknath Yoga

March 18th 2009 16:38
Loknath Yoga is one of the more traditional Yoga practices, rather than a workout routine. Patanjali's Yoga sutra is the basis for this Ashtanga style practice. It was first developed by Shri Loknath Brahmachari who was born in 1730 and died in 1890. He was renowned for his Yogic skills and pranic healing ability, and he was so aware that he was able to inform his followeres that he was going to die moments before doing so. The style was then further formulated by Shri Thakur Janakinath Brahmachari who was born in 1965 in West Bengal, India. He is said to be the reincarnation of the former master Yogi.

Loknath Yoga includes Pranayama and gentle Asana practice. Postures are held for a short time at the start, but practitioners work up to maintaining the poses for a greater length of time and including meditation. The Mudras, Bandhas, and Kriyas are also a part of this tradition. The Yogic diet is involved with the proper practice of Loknath Yoga

Yoga Styles: Laughter Yoga

March 17th 2009 00:26
Laughter Yoga is a gentle workout style of Yoga, far removed from the more serious 'complete' Indian Yoga practices of the past. It was created by an Indian, Dr. Madan Kataria, who began the practice of laughter Yoga in a park with five practitioners in March 1995. There are now over 6000 laughter Yoga groups across the globe in 60 different countries. Classes are free and fun. Whilst it may sound a little too modern and unrealistic to some, laughter Yoga provides assistance within contemporary life with a connection to Yoga as well as commercialism.

The practice of laughter Yoga combines Pranayama with forced laughter and gentle stretching exercises. Due to the physical body being unable to differentiate between reality and falseness, the falsely created laughter is said to be beneficial in the same way as the genuine thing. Laughter Yoga produces false laughter, creating a temporary escape route from the stresses and tension of modern life. Recent studies have been involved with determining the place of laughter Yoga in the workforce, as a possible helpful tool for workers endurance and productivity

Yoga Styles: Laya-Yoga

March 12th 2009 16:10
Laya Yoga is generally another Guru-disciple based Yoga meditation practice - and definitely not a casual fitness workout style, even if you seek online instruction instead. It is based on the Chakras, though utilizing them as doorways towards higher consciousness rather than simply as energy channels for physical health. Laya Yoga can break you free of dependency upon the physical, thinking-mind, and emotional-sensual level of mind. Laya Yoga provides a method of establishing contact and awareness of deeper mind-zones.

There are two main forms of Laya Yoga - Tantrika Laya Yoga and Vaidika Laya Yoga. These depend on if you follow a Tantric or Vedic system of practice. The difference also determines if you can practice from an online source or will require a Guru-disciple relationship

Yoga Styles: Lambikâ-Yoga

Lambika Yoga is the term to describe the practice of Khechari Mudra. This is not a workout class style Yoga, but a serious and difficult practice. It is only to be learned via the Guru-disciple method.

The mudras used in Lambika Yoga are

What you cannot do

March 6th 2009 18:00
When I was a single digit kid, I could leap into any posture the TV Yoga series offered - not properly performing the Asana and practicing Yoga, but instantly showing off the position to perfection. When Yoga reentered my life a few years ago, I was far less agile. I had sinus problems, an arthritic back, and was generally 'old and tired'. I realized that there were some poses I would not be able to do - yet, if ever.

I was content to practice those I could do, ones that helped me generally stay fit and retain freedom from my back complaint. Then I started Tibetan heart Yoga practice and was faced with several of the poses I had put aside as 'cannot do these'. Struggling to actually begin to perform poses that were entirely out of my ability started me on the road to accepting any pose - not instantly as in my childhood, but gradually

Yoga Styles: Kriyâ-Yoga

March 3rd 2009 01:04
Stemming from Karma, Jnana, and Bhakti Yoga, Kriya Yoga emphasizes breathing and its mental-spiritual effects. It is a Yoga taught in the 'teacher-to-pupil' format and includes such matters as principles and appropriate lifestyle on the side. The actual practice involves guided meditation and pranayama aimed at establishing inner awareness and purity of mind through the use of energy control. Mantras and initiations are also involved.

The modern revival of these long-lost Indian techniques was brought about from 1861 onward by Mahavatar Babaji through Shri Shyamacharan Lahiri. The well-known book, Autobiography of a Yogi, tells of this matter in detail. Kriay Yoga reached the Western world in the 1920's, through Yogananda
