Yoga Styles: Pre-natal Yoga 1

May 31st 2009 16:38
Pre-natal Yoga, when done correctly, is not simply a method of lessening the variety of your practice or the exertion of a regular routine, but a way to establish a harmonious energy flow between yourself and the baby, to calm yourself down and relax, and to create moments suited to inner reflection.

“Through practise you can learn to have immediate control of your energy or you can effect a gradual change in your constitutional and habitual energy patterns. You can also affect the way your baby’s energy is working and you can effectively programme a lot of how your baby’s energy system if formed in-utero. We can learn to managing all forms of energy through yoga postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation. These are the tools I teach in every pre-natal yoga class.” - Swami Gurupremananda Saraswati - http://www.tarayoga.net

Maintenance Yoga

May 27th 2009 16:15
Many times I will confront my Yoga session less than full-heartedly, not due to lack of faith in Yoga, but due to minor problems such as having had a por sleep, having sinus problems, mild constipation, or being a bit stiff or cold. If it were not for the maintenance Yoga session I might skip for the day, and thereby end up out of touch with Yoga. Maintenance Yoga keeps your body 'going' by providing the basics without anything exciting, difficult, or strenuous.

My personal maintenance Yoga consists of the following shortened routine: Savasana, leg raises, quick shoulderstand, bow, savasana, neck rolls, the first two poses of Surya Namaskar, savasana. Without the leg raises, my lower back might give me further trouble. The shoulderstand is usually helpful toward my sinus problems and especially handy if I have a stiff neck. The bow pose counteracts the shoulderstand and leg raises and helps my shoulders. The neck rolls are always good - as I tend to suffer from a stiff neck due to my constant typing for work. I have yet to master the complete run through of Surya Namaskar, but the first two vertical stretches provide a quick back relief/hip movement, and a gentle tug on the old hamstrings. Plenty of Savasana keeps me going

Change of Routine

May 24th 2009 15:16
Every so often I will make slight alterations to my basic Yoga routine. Recently, I took another look at it and realized that over the past six months I had made a few changes. I still begin with my leg raising following the initial Savasana, but from then onward it changes.

Instead of directly entering my shoulderstand, I roll into Halasana and then up into it. I also tend to hang around in the pose for a while, if time permits. Instead of doing a desk pose, I generally do the bridge pose instead, these days. I also often replace the locust and scorpion with Dhanurasana. If I have time, I will also pop in a short meditation session after my neck and eye warm-up exercises

Yoga Styles: Power Yoga

May 22nd 2009 15:59
Power Yoga is included in the branch known as Hatha Yoga. It is performed in a heated room. Various teachers offer different experiences within the title of Power Yoga, but generally you will find it is geared to those who are seeking to keep fit, burn calories, and shape up. Sometimes, you will find some of the spiritual aspects included also. It is the most commonly practiced form of Yoga in the US, but is also increasing in popularity within Australia. Power Yoga draws on several Yoga traditions, rather than keeping to one specific lineage or set of Asanas, although it is often based on Vinyasa and Ashtanga style Yoga practice.

Power Yoga was a term not used until the mid 1990s. it came about when teachers wanted to westernize Ashtanga Yoga. Because the majority of westerners turn to yoga in the middle of their lives and are not starting out with the flexibility of childhood - or used to sitting in the Lotus - it was decided that a new Yoga form suited to the West should be used. Power Yoga encourages everyday westerners to try Yoga. Strength and flexibility are both emphasized, and the popularity of Power Yoga came about mostly due to its workout properties. It has enabled Yoga to become a part of the 'gym' lifestyle, introducing Yoga to many more people

Yoga Styles: Pâtanjala-Yoga

May 18th 2009 18:13
Patanjala Yoga is a form of Yoga based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It is also known as Ashtanga, Asta-anga, and Astaunga Yoga, as well as Classical or Raja Yoga. Ashtanga is translatable as 8-limbs.

Patanjali was a prominent sage from thousands of years ago. His Yoga Sutras remain one of the most well known and most practiced sources for Yoga. The Sutras are contained in four chapters consisting of 195 verses. There are more than forty different known translations into English. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are also known as Yoga Darshana. They contain both instructions and knowledge. They describe and explain the oral Yogic teachings. The four chapters are known as padas and are the Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada and Kaivalya Pada. They were written in Sanskrit between 250 BC to 250AD. When precisely Yoga itself originated is uncertain - although it is known that The Buddha was a yoga practitioner - as Yoga was originally passed on orally, leaving no written record. However, it is certain to have originated several centuries piror to The Buddha

Yoga Styles: Pâshupata-Yoga

May 15th 2009 17:44
Pashupata Yoga stems from the word pashupati, which can be translated as lord of souls, one of the names given to the Hindu deity Siva. Among the practices of the Pashupatas you will find the thrice-daily smearing of the body with ash, meditation, and 'OM' chanting. Practice of Pashupata Yoga also includes vows, puja and penance, and the rejection of mainstream society. It is a religious practice that uses the Pashupata Sutras as its main scripture, which are said to originate from Lakulisha. Since these teachings, Kaundinya's commentary has been added to their recognized scriptures. Also, Panchartha Bhashya from around 500 and the Mrigendra Agama are taught. The Pashupatas are mentioned within the Mahabharata. The Vayu Purana contains chapters on: music, Vedic shakhas, Pashupata-yoga, and the duties of various castes.

The Pashupatas were the oldest established group of Saivite ascetic monks. With their hair unkempt and tied or coiled, they foccussed on Siva and his commpassion, rather than the world about them. They were alienated from the rest of Vedic society. Akin to Buddhists, the Pashupatas accepted any caste within their society

Yoga Styles: Nude Yoga

May 6th 2009 17:32
The other form of Nude Yoga is a far more serious practice. It aims at personal liberation and awareness, and union with the inner divinity. In this form of nude yoga, the nudity is for the purpose of allowing body toxins to escape with ease, in order to purify both the body and soul. It is a meditation-based practice as opposed to Nude Aerobics Yoga, which emphasizes the Asanas.

Nude Yoga works toward a trance to suspend motion leading to internal progression. This form of Nude Yoga stems from the word Nirvana - which can be translated as nakedness, though generally meaning a mental nudity. It is a Tantric form of Yoga sometimes connected with a Yogic practice known as Pundai Yoga. In the US, those interested in joining a group involved with this form of Yoga can contact nirvanasociety@pundai.org for full details.

Nude Yoga can also be called Naked Yoga or Nudist Yoga. However, in some forms it is not simply practicing the Asanas whilst nude. In cases where this is the sole aspect, it is generally referred to as Nude Aerobics Yoga, to distinguish it from other forms of Yoga that are practiced whilst naked.

In the past, many Yoga practitioners lived in the wilderness or forests, and therefore practice was not often done communally. Many of these people did not have clothing, living as ascetics without a regular diet or conventional lifestyle. Various Nude Yoga classes and groups are now springing up around the world, including yoga studios and centers, as well as private clubs and resorts. Sometimes, the Yoga Center may dim the lighting to encourage newcomers to participate, as it can be a very strange or difficult experience if you are not used to nudity

Nude Aerobics Yoga refers to performing Yoga Asanas without your clothes on. It allows for added flexibility in your motions. Many feel that Yoga is an exercise that brings us towards nature, so should be performed naturally. Also, being naked helps to bring the mind into the present, which may be relevant to your form and purpose of Yoga. Developing an acceptance of the body in its natural state is only one purpose for participation.

As well as allowing a trainer to better see the posture of class members and so lead them to better alignment, other purposes include promoting a sense of openness between participants, overcoming worries pertaining to physical imperfection, the awareness of the natural body, and the development of self esteem. Free sweating is another benefit to Nude Yoga - with the view that clothing can hamper both movement of the limbs and release of impurities
