Yoga Tap - August 2009

Yoga Styles: Siddha-Yoga

August 31st 2009 15:43
Siddha Yoga is based on the Hindu spirituality of Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism. Originally, Siddha Yoga was mentioned in the 7th or 8th century AD. It can be translated from Sanskrit to mean perfect or perfected Yoga. Practices involved with Siddha Yoga include meditation, chanting, study of scriptural texts, Hatha Yoga, and teachings. The main focus is on discovering and developing awareness of our personal inner divinity.

Modern Siddha Yoga came about when Swami Muktananda, now deceased, explained the path of self-realization he encountered due to the guidance of Indian Bhagawan Nityananda. In the mid-seventies, Swami Muktananda created the SYDA Foundation. The official Siddha Yoga organization has ashrams and meditation centers around the globe, including India, USA, Australia, England and France. Many practitioners find it easier to study and grow within Siddha Yoga within these settings

* Body Cleansing Procedures - which include Kapala Bhati, Neti, Tratak, Dhauti, Basti, and Nauli.
* Asana - body postures

Yoga Styles: Samrambha-Yoga

August 14th 2009 14:34
Samrambha is a Jain word meaning groundwork - the collecting and preparing for something. It is a type of Yoga involving spiritual devotion that can be summed up in the Sufi proverb. "You can meditate for fifteen years and get one inch closer to God; or you can be really angry and be with Him instantly."

Samrambha-Yoga is the practice of a very old, barely-known spiritual path entitled the 'path of wrath'. Scriptures are known to mention Samrambha Yoga as a special path reserved only for those whose swiftest passage to the realization of God lies in the fierce and strong negative emotions such as anger and hatred. It was originally said to be reserved only for the Asuras, but is now also a Yogic pathway in use by those karmicaly aligned to its practice - I.e. those people with strong anger or hatred for whom a connection to the divine becomes an impatient desperate requirement. It may offer a faster method of reaching communication with God than other Yogic paths such as karma, bhakti, or jnana, because of the strength of the focused emotion. For some of us, hatred or anger can focus the concentrated mind far more intensely than love, and it therefore turns into devotion when directed to God due to impatience with feelings of separation from divinity

Yoga Styles: Samnyâsa & Samputa Yoga

August 10th 2009 15:37

Samnyasa Yoga refers to the mystic spiritual life within Hinduism, when a person is involved in the spiritual world after putting aside all ties to their material life. A practitioner is known as a sannyasi, sannyasin or sanyasi. They live without possessions, practice yoga meditation, and prays to accomplish samadhic enlightenment and moksha

Yoga Styles: Sâmkhya-Yoga

August 3rd 2009 15:08
Samkhya and sankhya are interchangeable words and translate from Sanskrit into enumeration. This form of Yoga belongs to the six classic Indian philosophy schools within Hinduism and comes from times well before Yoga meant physical poses more than philosophy.

Verification of the founder is unavailable, though some sources state that 'Kapila', a great sage, is responsible. It is possible that the origins of Samkhya Yoga date back to pre-Aryan times around 5000 years ago and were later incorporated into Vedic traditions
