YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 2

June 30th 2010 15:09
V1: The first verse can be taken in at least two ways as is evident from the two renderings of translation. The introductory sentence informs us either that instructions on being made whole or a discussion on Yoga follows. This may mean the same thing, dependant upon your definition and translation of the word YOGA.

V2: In one translation, we are informed that Yoga is ‘the restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff’. the other tells us that wholeness is the control over awareness and being. Once again, these are basically the same in meaning, if you consider how awareness is generally obtained

YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 1

June 26th 2010 04:53
The translation from Kofi Busia is the text that I eventually selected to study. My initial reaction to the first line was ‘oh, maybe I should have chosen a different translation…’ I was then disturbed by my Father - so opened a second translation to consider in tandem with the former by Mark Garrison, rather than jumping in and beginning.

It appears from a brief glance at the two texts that the sutras consist of four separate sections, known as books. The first is named Samadhi Pada, referring to ‘On Bringing Into Harmony‘, or a Portion on Contemplation. The second book is called Sadhana Pada, and refers to practice or ‘On Bringing Together

I had decided to begin on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras tonight. I located a website which apparently had a copy in English, and saved the page whilst considering other texts. When returning to the page to collect the text and begin to read and study, I was denied access.

My second attempt led me to a website with multiple copies of the translated work - so, once again, not a simple task to select ONE translation and begin to work on it

STUDYING YOGA TEXTS

June 16th 2010 16:49
My silence recently has been due to not knowing where to begin. I planned to start writing about studying various texts relative to Yoga, but have yet to decide on which text to start.

The Patanjali Yoga Sutras are a definite and the Vedas are an obvious historical and spiritual/religious source to cover, but there are others and I simply have not yet decided where to begin. (If I cannot decide by this time next week, I will commence on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras

Workout v Spiritual System

June 2nd 2010 06:15
To many people, Yoga is the means to a healthy body. Sometimes people want to lose weight; at other times they simply want to improve their shape. Yoga might do this for you - but to me Yoga is more about what it originally was - a system of spirituality.

If you want to shed a few kilo, trim up your belly and thighs, or fix your achy back, Yoga can do that - BUT that was not what Yoga was about hundreds of years ago, and to some practitioners the looks and feel still remain a side bonus rather than the main target
