Yoga Tap - July 2010

Other Asana - Baddha Padmasana

July 31st 2010 17:04
Beginning in the Full Lotus position, the following can add either variety to your routine or an extra stretch on top of the usual seated posture.

Firstly, pass your left arm behind your back and hold on to the toes of your left foot. Secondly, move your right arm behind your back and hold your right toes. As you exhale, keeping your back straight, lower your head so that your chin touches to the floor in front of you

Another save by Yoga!

July 28th 2010 18:36
This past week has been extremely active and hectic for me. My father is in hospital, recuperating after a major operation last month. He gets extremely fretful and distressed in the unfamiliar surroundings, without a glimpse of his at-home routine. The hours are different, the faces are different, the lifestyle is different - he feels like you or i would if we woke up on an alien planet...

Firstly, I am grateful to Yoga for keeping me fit enough to handle this. I have a 1-hour walk each way just to visit Dad each day. My being there is one familiar face in a crazy unreal world to him. I have always been a walker, never had a car, but I am not used to having to walk daily, rather than choosing each day if I want to or not

YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 6

July 14th 2010 03:41
V16: A second level of non-attachment comes when you become aware of reality and thereby become detached from worldly matters.

I would like to add that as this is also a part of Buddhist practice, I have already begun to practice and experience this prior to reading Patanjali’s text. I would therefore like to share one of the practices I have personally found to be helpful at this stage

YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 5

July 10th 2010 04:04
V12: We are now informed that we can control these mental movements, and can do this through practice and non-attachment/participation. (This also lies along similar lines to my Buddhist study, meaning that I have already started to do this.)

V13: We are now told what ‘practice’ consists of - the continuity of steadiness. A stabilization of the mentality - I see this as being similar to a balanced scale where each weight is identical, rather than a constantly shifting see-saw effect as right and wrong moves bounce the scale erratically

YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 4

July 7th 2010 07:17
V9: This verse is similar to the last, but takes a different mind function, telling us words without basis in reality - or imagination - results in delusion.

V10: This verse seems to be saying that sleep, in the mental rather than physical sense, is a state of non-idea, non-activity or non-thought

YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 3

July 4th 2010 13:29
V5: This verse is self explanatory, informing us that there are 5 separate styles of mental movement, some of which bring contentment and some pain. This is further explained in the next few verses.

V6: This verse lists the five mental conditions: right/correct knowledge and the reverse, delusion, sleep and memory
