Diet & Fasting: Me

February 13th 2008 15:11
Whereas I have yet to perfect my diet, I have made major advances over the past couple of years. Though not all tie in with my Yoga practice, I recognize the classic Yoga diet instructions as superior to modern fad diets and government recommendations, neither of which I pay the least attention to.

My current diet is mostly based upon what my body feels a need for, and when it feels the need to consume. I tend to favor basic natural foods bought at the deli or Asian supermarket over packaged processed regular supermarket products. I also prefer to eat fresh fruit and veg. from my yard, which I know to be truly grown organically. (I use seed, mud, water, homemade compost from kitchen scraps, and nature's weather ONLY!) I have succeeded in lessening my chocolate intake and limiting my meat eating habits. I am at present exploring the effects of the three types of food listed in the Yoga diet literature on my own body.

Currently, on my average workday, I will consume a mug of coffee - made from freshly ground and brewed real coffee beans - in lieu of breakfast. I find that along with drinking water, this sustains my energy sufficiently for several hours and that my work proceeds adequately, despite coffee being a maybe/maybe not on health grounds. (If I partook of a conventional government recommended breakfast, I would feel sluggish and lazy as well as hungry all through the entire day.)

My lunch is usually a second coffee, a mug-soup, a miso, a chunk of cheese, or a piece of fruit. Along with adequate drinking water, this suffices to keep me filled until late afternoon/early evening, so I see no need to eat a larger meal, let alone eat 2 meals and 2 snacks by such an hour as dinnertime - as the government currently recommends. On Fridays and celebration/sulking days, I may indulge in a little alcohol for lunch, however.

Dinnertime is when I celebrate food. I find that if I can slip my Yoga routine in between work and dinner, it fits with the instruction to not practice Yoga for 1-2 hours after a snack meal or 4-5 hours after a main meal. I feel empty and bendy at such times, though sometimes my son sticks his head out from his room, wondering where dinner is…

I attempt to eat one basic and healthy main meal, generally followed by a nutritional dessert. I often fail, due to not being able to afford only organic produce, liking delicious tastes as well as food that only fills, and enjoying my meal! I often eat barley, rice, lentil or legume based meals, usually inclusive of vegetables and high in chili and black pepper flavorings. These are usually followed by rice, oatmeal, fruit, or home made baked goods. I sometimes also eat home made bread and indulge in a little alcohol.

Varying matters arise to destroy my intentions to eat properly. Celebrations make me wish to drink too much alcohol; high prices tend to make me opt on non organic produce; taste directs me towards the chocolate item or home made pizza; female cycle matters and days on which I feel hungry or extremely disheartened tend to lead me to add a snack or extra glass of alcohol; my son nags me to eat more meat in our meals, particularly if I have not done so for some time. To counteract my detrimental choices, I have begun to take semi-fast days. On these days, I either only drink but do not eat, or I only take one small snack meal. I am looking into more appropriate Yogic fasting.

A lot of my diet is not compatible with the traditional Yogic diet, though in comparison to the average human, I would consider myself more on track than most. There are some things that I feel are healthy for me to consume, that are forbidden or frowned upon in excess, for example, such as coffee and onions. Compared to my diet three or four years ago, I consider myself to be eating far better choices. I now drink wine or beer rather than stronger drinks, far less meat, many more basic ingredients, and less dairy. I plan to combine the foods my body asks for, the tastes I enjoy, and as healthy an intake as I can handle - but also to read more about the Yogic diet and perhaps incorporate a few more of these values in my personal intake. In my next post, I will explain the basics of the CORRECT Yogic diet - for those wishing to completely immerse themselves into the exact way of life and living from the stance of Yoga.

so, some days you have a cup of coffee for breakfast, then a cup of coffee for lunch, and nothing else? That sounds rough...

Wow, very interesting. I don't really know much about Yoga. This blog is definitely educational.
