Different Styles: ANANDA YOGA
July 22nd 2008 17:42
The word 'Ananda' translates as bliss or happiness. Ananda yoga practice covers the areas of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and philosophy. It operates under the Hatha Yoga principles, being recognized as part of the Raja/Kriya Yoga traditions. This style of Yoga places a strong emphasis on both community and spiritual development. Ananda Yoga is currently practiced across the world.
Recognizing the energy of the Chakras, Ananda Yoga is less of an exercise workout than a practice designed to assist with inner development. Emphasis is placed of inner peace and harmony, leading to spiritual realization and consciousness. It originated from Swami Kriyananda, based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, (who wrote 'Autobiography of a Yogi') of whom Swami Kriyananda was a pupil/disciple.
Silent affirmation is included in Asana practice, a separate affirmation used for each pose. The postures begin with relaxed and gentle poses for beginners. They are tailored to suit the individual rather than a text book position. Relaxation is emphasized. A set of special exercises termed 'Energization Exercises' were developed by Yogananda and are used within the practice in order to control energy and improve the focus of the practitioner.
Ananda has become a community practice and a worldwide movement. Offering regular Yoga and Meditation retreats for both practitioners and teachers, the most well-known community is situated at Ananda Village in California. Founded in 1968, it has since offered a combination of Yoga practice and instruction within a peaceful environment. On offer from Ananda Village - and other Ananda Yoga communities - are specialized schools, retreats, services, and community friendship. The aim being to provide spiritual communities based on the teachings of Yogananda, where a simple life combines with meditative and philosophical experience.
