Different Styles: ANUSARA YOGA

July 3rd 2008 15:01
Anusara Yoga is a modern Yogic practice developed by John Friend a mere decade ago. Since 1997, this recently introduced style has reportedly spread rapidly across the Americas from Canada to Mexico, all around Europe, and also infiltrated Australia & Japan. Classes are now becoming available worldwide, with Anusara Yoga now one of the most popular styles of Yoga practiced today. For full details on this style of Yoga and practitioners near you, go to www.anusara.com.

Anusara refers to 'following your heart' or 'flowing gracefully' and comes from the text of the Kularnava Tantra. It is within the Hatha family of Yogic practices and combines internal Tantric philosophy with external alignment principles. Students of all abilities & levels are welcomed and accepted. Emphasis is placed on individuality and creativity, whilst appreciation is given to beauty, truth and divinity. Attitude, alignment and action are all paid attention. As with many forms of Yoga, Anusara practice is suitable for practitioners seeking to alleviate pain, stress, emotional blockages, and lack of purpose.

Anusara Yoga approves of the use of props, including blocks, straps and blankets. The classes are generally performed in a caring and friendly atmosphere, with the spiritual well-being of the students taken into account along with the exercises. Classes generally commence with a prayer of recognition towards the divinity within. Anusara places an emphasis on discovering one's inner being, whilst also concentrating on proper alignment during Asana practices. Classes tend to end with a meditation or Savasana relaxation session. This is to encourage the student to maintain their linkage to their inner divinity. There are few limitations due to the versatility of the classes; teachers being willing to accommodate students with difficulties, medical problems, and complete beginners.
