Different Styles: General
June 17th 2008 01:05
There are numerous forms of Yoga being practiced around the world today. Some have been handed down generation by generation, from teacher to pupil, originating in ancient Indian history. Yoga was first mentioned in the Vedas, some 2700 years ago, but was previously found 500 years prior to that in the form of stone seals portraying Yogic postures discovered in the Indus Valley. Other styles include those versions of Yoga especially adapted for the modern Western practitioner.
The majority of Yoga practices in the Western world follow the Hatha Yoga traditions, but it can be somewhat confusing when you first decide to practice - unless you have some friends already involved - as to which form of Yoga might be best for you. You may be more interested in finding the cheapest lessons, the most authentic Indian text, a genuine traditional and experienced teacher, just exercises, or the ultra modern Western woman DVD. There are not only different styles, schools, and formats to consider, but many variations within each.
Some Yoga formats deal mostly with the physical Asana practices, although many more complete their teachings with at least Pranayama and meditation, if not an entire system for the whole person. Some of the more popular styles today (alphabetically) include: Ananda, Anusara, Ashtanga, Bikram, Integral, Iyengar, Kripalu, Kundalini, Natural Yoga, Power Yoga. Restorative Yoga, Sivananda, Tantra, & Viniyoga. I intend to explain the more popular Yoga practices over the next few weeks.
