Routine Alterations & Adaptions: Recent changes

April 11th 2008 21:37
I have made several changes to my regular routine during the past couple of months. Partly, this resulted from a change of lifestyle and season leading to practicing at a different time of day, and partly from health problems that arose.

Due to excessive enthusiasm with gardening, my back started to become sore again, limiting some of my postures for around a week. When performing any of the back-bend or spinal-twist asanas, I have had to bend/twist less than usual. I have recently been cutting the Locust and Scorpion from my routine, as well as the Plough. To counteract this, I have been spending a longer time in lesser stages of other spinal bend/twist postures.

I have also had to partake of several Yoga stretches and warm-ups during my workday, in order to avoid stiffness and soreness creeping in. When I have a soreness in my back, I tend to slump. It is not intentional, but even when consciously attempting to sit erect in my typing chair, I tend to curl up with the cold, slop sideways with the stiffness, and sag with the effort to stay in a correct posture for a long time. For this reason, I have started to perform my neck roll warm up sequence and shoulder lift/rolls from time to time. Performing backwards Namaste whilst awaiting pages to load on the computer is another measure I am taking to ensure my back does not become a serious problem again. It seems to have worked, for I do not feel any stiffness or pain today...

Additionally, wild gales have stirred up my sinuses. This has led to my Pranayama practice becoming difficult and resultless. The natural aliveness I generally feel when my breathing is deep and even, along with the added energy from structured Pranayama practice, is lacking. My breathing used to remain correct for most of the day, keeping me vibrant and healthy. However, the effects now vanish the moment I leave the Yoga room. I understand that this is temporary, and once my sinuses are back on track, my health will be too. Whilst using a Neti pot may clear my nose for a few hours, allowing me to remain breathing through my nostrils rather than a gaping mouth and therefore perform a proper Pranayama routine, nothing seems to fully alleviate the 'heavy head' pressure that leads to my tired neck and tense shoulders. I am therefore paying more attention to these areas for another reason than my back shifting my focus.

I have managed to stop sinus problems rising from other causes, but being allergic to heavy air pressure rather than to a physical substance, it is difficult to completely prevent my nose from reacting during weather such as heavy rain, storm, or gale. I may have to investigate online resources, as I seem to have read all the Yoga books in our library which mention diet/nasal cleanliness.
