Searching and continuation

March 24th 2009 01:56
Recently, I have been searching for a specific brand of Yoga to follow. It is not that the two that I currently follow are lacking in any way, more that I seem led towards investigating further. This may be because I can not seem to take the Asanas any further yet want to get more involved with Yoga, or it might be that when other areas of my life fail and I have faith in Yoga I seek to step deeper in; maybe I am just naturally inclined toward a certain branch and have not yet discovered it.

With most people, continual application of Asana practice leads to a healthier fitter body. Yes, I too have benefited physically. However, each time I progress a little, I fall back again. Instead of being able to hold to a constant improvement with the occasional plateau, I seem to bounce from beginner to intermediate and then back to 'day one' stiffness.

For example, after having slowly crawled into shoulderstand, I may have a few days where I can glide into the Asana and hold it to perfection for five or ten minutes and drift off into meditation. The next week, I am stiff, sore and unable to roll up into the position with ease again, rather than ready to continue into further adaptations or maintain a longer hold.

This is repeated over months - and now years - and with most Asanas. I do not object to having a few off days, or being stiff if I take two rather than one day away from my Yoga practice - but it feels that there is a barrier on my progressing any further with my current routine and poses. I am trying to discover if I should search for a new style of Yoga that can 'get me through' this barrier, or if I should just be satisfied to stay 'stuck' in the beginners section for my entire life Asana wise and concentrate on Yoga's other aspects instead.

My current idea is to work on a few 'new' Asana for my normal routine and try to shape up my diet, but I am also wondering if it may be connected with poor sleeping habits - and this is something I can not correct until I retire. Some days, I just wish I were living in such a country where I could simply walk out the door from modern society, and go vanish some place totally natural where I could practice nothing but both Buddhism and Yoga until I died of starvation.
