Workout v Spiritual System
June 2nd 2010 06:15
To many people, Yoga is the means to a healthy body. Sometimes people want to lose weight; at other times they simply want to improve their shape. Yoga might do this for you - but to me Yoga is more about what it originally was - a system of spirituality.
If you want to shed a few kilo, trim up your belly and thighs, or fix your achy back, Yoga can do that - BUT that was not what Yoga was about hundreds of years ago, and to some practitioners the looks and feel still remain a side bonus rather than the main target.
I admit that my first interest in Yoga 4-5 years ago was a mild consideration that it might help me get through a couple of stressful years that lay ahead of me as well as help my arthritis that the modern western world doctors could not cure and told me would continually get worse. However, once my friend Ralph had talked half-hearted me into actually taking up Yoga, I had only been at it a week and I had already begun to find numerous other benefits and these led me to continue with Yoga far beyond the asanas.
Within a few sessions I had discovered how important breathing exercises were for me. The difference in my daily life from just a few moments of special breathing was massive. Not only did Yoga practice fix my fused lumbar vertebrae back to normal, teach me how to breathe properly, and how to relax, but Yoga gave me a whole life full of LIFE!
