TYPE TWO
Dream Yoga In the Tibetan Buddhist traditions is an advanced Tantric practice. It involves Tantric techniques within the bardo areas of Dream and Sleep, along with Yoga Nidra. Well known Buddhist masters Marpa, Milarepa, and Nagarjuna are connected with Dream Yoga.
The Kagyu and Dzogchen Kham lineages recognize the purpose of Dream Yoga, as do the Nyingma lineage. Each lineage has its own way of teaching and practicing Dream Yoga. Collectively, they use the communal mindstream level easiest to reach within the dream state - that can also be reached by some in the waking state through meditation or deep relaxation. The purpose is to use the time that would otherwise be wasted in carelessly dreaming at random in ignorance, by accessing the dream state and participating or transforming it on a different mind level.
There are six stages in the practice of Dream Yoga for the purpose of reaching the inner clear light:
* become alert and aware within the dream.
* defeat all fears concerning the dream contents.
* contemplate the similarities between phenomena within dreams and within waking life.
* realize one has control over the dream and activate control - for example by altering the size, color, or weight of objects.
* comprehend that both the dream body and other objects in the dream are similar in nature.
* visualize images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas within the dream state. The purpose of this is that they are said to be in connection with the clear light and can be used as a doorway to enter such.
Other purposes of Dream Yoga include receiving teachings and initiations from distant teachers, travel to other realms, conversing with other sentient beings, and shape shifting.
