Yoga Styles: Chair Yoga
October 21st 2008 00:37
Chair Yoga is a Yoga style that is - as the title suggests - practiced mainly whilst seated in a chair. Additional asana using the chair as support whilst standing are sometimes included. Chair Yoga can be beneficial to those unable to practice regular styles, such as the invalid, disabled or the elderly population. For this reason, it is often a class offered at senior centers or nursing homes as a valid form of exercise.
Some Yoga centers are also using Chair Yoga as an option to bring in members of the public that would not otherwise be able to benefit from attendance. Many instructors are taught to recognize various health problems and how to adapt Asanas to deal with these. Therefore classes tend to be suitable for individuals with specific problems.
Most classes originally focused on Asana practice. However, some classes for Chair Yoga now also include other yogic aspects, such as Pranayama and meditation. Whereas Chair Yoga does not appear to offer a complete Yogic lifestyle, classes do vary and some offer more than others.
