If following the Hindu Yoga system, or the 8-limbs of yoga system (AKA Patanjali's As(h)tanga), Dhyana Yoga is a meditation practice method involved. It refers to the level of meditation where awareness is of one's being, rather than the act of meditation. It is therefore a meditation practice, rather than a full Yoga lifestyle.
If following the Hindu Yoga system, you will find Dhyana mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, chapter 6. It is listed as a method for mind and sense control, assisting further meditation practices such as Samadhi. Reference is also made to Bhakti Yoga being a preferable practice in this chapter of the holy Hindu text. The overall aim of such Yoga practices being to connect with the inner divinity and transfer control from the other mind levels resulting in cessation of incorrect mental activities.
Another definition of Dhyana Yoga is observation of and connection to the internal, eternal, natural, unchanging reality. Sri Brahmananda QUOTE: “The more you go inside, the more force you will exert in the outer life.”
