Yoga Styles: Iyengar yoga
January 21st 2009 00:36
BKS Iyengar is the known creator of Iyengar Yoga, a style that uses various forms of props within its Asana based practice. Correct alignment is an essential and many corrections are made during a typical class to ensure that each student is practicing the correct form of each pose.
At least 200 postures have been included in Iyengar Yoga, along with fourteen forms of Pranayama. These have additional variations, bringing the total number to a larger figure. While Asana and Pranayama are strongly emphasized in class practice, the additional features of Patanjali's eight limbs of Yoga are also a part of a complete Iyengar practice.
"Yoga means union. The union of the individual soul with the Universal Spirit is yoga. But this is too abstract a notion to be easily understood, so for our level of understanding I say that yoga is the union of body with the mind and of mind with the soul". BKS Iyengar - Tree of Yoga
