Yoga Styles: Jivamukti yoga
January 26th 2009 17:06
The word Jivamukti translates as liberation while living. It was created in 1984 by David Life and Sharon Gannon in NYC. Jivamukti Yoga is a combination of Ashtanga Yoga practice with the teachings of Shri K Pattabhi Jois aimed at incorporating Yoga as a part of daily life.
Popularized due to celebrity practitioners Sting, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Uma Thurman, Jivamukti Yoga is now trendy US wide for those wanting a Vinyasa form of Yoga practice. A typical class will include music, chanting, scripture and meditation as well as Pranayama and intense Asana practice, and generally runs to a theme.
It is a Yoga style that would appeal to those who want a boisterous workout - yet also want to explore Yoga principles beyond the physical. The original creators continue to teach in NYC where they focus on the principles of Ahimsa and environmental issues, offering instruction in many side-steps from Jivamukti Yoga practice as well as the classes.
