Karma Yoga can also be called Buddhi Yoga, discipline of action, or Karmic Yoga. It stems from a summary contained within the Bhagavad-Gita, a well known Hindu scripture. A second Hindu text the Mahabharata contains Lord Krishna elaborating on several forms of Yoga practices and principles to aid his troubled friend's upcoming dilemma - Karma Yoga being one of these.
The basis of Karma Yoga involves carrying out ones duties without expectation of reward. One should learn to control mental desires, whilst performing necessary actions and obligations. To practice Karma Yoga, you offer selfless service, doing your duties with a sense of divine purpose and dedication and without the wish to gain wealth or power for their achievement. The overall emphasis is on activity without attachment to the outcome.
Karma Yoga is therefore a Yoga practice for those seeking to devote their lives toward doing your necessary deeds without complaint and aiming toward inner self improvement, your specific Hindu deity, or the good of mankind in its entirety, rather than purely doing them for outward purposes such as an improved personal status or monetary gain.
