Yoga Styles: Kripalu Yoga
February 24th 2009 00:31
Kripalu Yoga combines Asana practice with meditation and Pranayama. Spirituality and inner awareness are also an important part of this yoga practice, which is separated into three stages:
* Learning the Asana and becoming aware of your individual body's strengths and weaknesses.
* Extending the duration of the completed postures and working on inner development, spiritual aspects, and concentration.
* Moving between Asana spontaneously in what is termed 'Meditation in Motion'.
Yogi Desai was born in Halol, India. At age 15, he began a close relationship with his teacher Swami Kripalvananda, who was a Kundalini Yoga master in India. Yogi Amrit Desai created Kripalu Yoga when inspired by his guru, and later named the Kripalu Center after him. Swami Kripalvanandaji is often referred to as 'Bapuji', meaning beloved grandfather. He lived from 1913 to 1981 and was known as a speaker, writer and also a musician as well as a Kundalini master.
The first Kripalu Yoga Ashram was created in 1972 at Sumneytown, Pennsylvania. It became an officially recognized spiritual and volunteer organization in 1988, and was modeled upon the Hindu Yoga Ashrams. Yogi Desai remained spiritual director of Kripalu until 1994, when he resigned.
The current Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health is situated in Lenox, Massachusetts. Yoga is not the only thing on offer, with African drumming, teacher training, and hiking workshops also available. They also run a well known three-month intensive Spiritual Lifestyle Program.
Famous Kripalu Yoga teachers include: Sudhir Jonathan Faust, Shobhan Richard Faulds, Stephen Cope, and Ann Greene.
