Yoga Styles: Lambikâ-Yoga
March 9th 2009 01:46
Lambika Yoga is the term to describe the practice of Khechari Mudra. This is not a workout class style Yoga, but a serious and difficult practice. It is only to be learned via the Guru-disciple method.
The mudras used in Lambika Yoga are:
*Khechari Mudra
*Yoni Mudra or Shanmukhi Mudra
*Sambhavi Mudra
*Asvini Mudra
*Maha Mudra
*Yoga Mudra
Chhedan and Dohan are the Kriyas involved with the practice of Lambika Yoga. The former relates to the weekly knife-slicing of the frenum lingua (tongue) and application of turmeric for many months. The latter refers to the application of butter to the tongue and its daily lengthening. This method is only necessary if you are not born with an already long tongue, in which case you can proceed without the above mentioned applications.
The tongue needs to touch the tip of the nose. It is folded, taken back, and when closing the back of the nostrils sitting meditation and breath cessation are performed. The method is connected to Kundalini Yoga and has been mentioned in the book of this name written by Sri Swami Sivananda - 'He who practices this Mudra will have neither hunger nor thirst. He can walk in the sky. This Yoga is beset with difficulties.'
In lesser complexity, Lambika Yoga can be described as an approach to stimulate the uvula and create an increase of (external) saliva and (internal) amrita. It is a method used to transcend the negative ego, and transfer the hunger for self inflation to that of divinity, enabling the practitioner to provide service for the sake of others rather than of self.
