Yoga Styles: Nâda-Yoga

April 6th 2009 17:44
Nada Yoga refers to the Yoga of sound. Using sound, a reestablishment of balance could be obtained when disharmony occurred within the body due to interference or interruption of Pranic flow, according to ancient Indians. Nada Yoga uses sound to harmonize and purify both the gross and subtle body energies, in order to bring them into correct placement with their natural motion.

There are two different types of sound, known as ahata and anahata. The former refers to sounds we hear through the use of our ears, whilst the latter refers to internal sounds issued from no observable source. Practice of Nada Yoga attempts to connect to these inner anahata sounds. Nada Yoga works on the assumption that the original nature of the universe is sonic and vibratory. It therefore aims to explore the natural universal origins within our own selves using anahata sounds.

Mantras, kirtans, and bhajans are all chanted when practicing Nada Yoga. Nada Yoga is concerned with Self-Realization using inaudible sound, the divine inner sound. Originally, practitioners of Nada Yoga stuck with repetition of the syllable OM, stemming from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras where it is described as a “sound that expresses the Divine Absolute”. Over the past five hundred years, Indian music, the Vedas, and Tantric philosophy had an influence on Nada Yoga. Nada Yoga incorporates all forms of sound or music. In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika you will find mention of Nada Yoga as in verse 66 - “There are one and a quarter crore ways told by Sri Adinath to attain laya, but we think the one and only thing is nada anusandhana or the exploration of nada.”

To practice Nada Yoga, practice Japa or Ajapa Japa pranayama until you can hear the anahata sounds within yourself. There are ten internal sounds, on hearing the ninth it is said you will develop the divine eye, and on the tenth, you reach the innermost universal natural sound of divinity.
