August 17th 2009 01:37
The word Sapta translates as sieves or seven. Therefore there should be no surprise that both Sapta Yoga has seven major actions, as well as being connected to the seven major chakras:
* Body Cleansing Procedures - which include Kapala Bhati, Neti, Tratak, Dhauti, Basti, and Nauli.
* Asana - body postures.
* Mudra - energy controlling gestures.
* Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses, inner silence.
* Pranayama - breathing exercises.
* Dhyana - pure sight of awareness and self-perception drawn from meditative state.
* Samadhi - self realization drawn from meditative state.
Saptanga Yoga refers to a similar Yoga style, using these seven limbs in much the same way Ashtanga Yoga has eight. Sapta Yoga additionally relates to the seven large Rishis of India, who are connected to the seven stars of the Ursa Major constellation, also known as the Great Bear:
* Visvamitra
* Jamadagni
* Bharadvaja
* Gautama
* Atri
* Vasistha
* Kasyapa
The official 'Sapta Yoga international' originates from founder Yogacharya Dr. Sushil Bhattacharya and was created in 1995. it uses the Gheranda Samhita text referrant to the 7-levels of exercise in the method of Shri Gheranda. Yogacharya Dr. Sushil Bhattacharya travels across the world to share Sapta Yoga, and has visited Nepal, Switzerland, France, Thailand, India and Canada among other places.
Extracts of the Gheranda Samhita text by Yogi Shri Gheranda state:
* 'As by learning the alphabets one can, through practice, master all the sciences, so by thoroughly practicing first the (physical) training, one acquires the Knowledge of Truth.'
* 'Like unto an unbaked earthen pot thrown in water, the body is soon decayed (in this world). Bake it hard in the fire of training in order to strengthen and purify the body.'
* 'There are no fetters like those of illusion (Maya), no strength like that which comes from discipline (Yoga), no friend higher than knowledge (Jnana) and no greater enemy than Egoism (Ahankara).'
Sapta Yoga does not use props. Age is no barrier to practice. Comparison between class practitioners is not acceptable. The inner progress is given more value than outer performance. Patience and consciousness are increased naturally by practice.
There is a special Sapta logo. The symbolizations include the 16 mauve petals of the Vishuddha chakra lotus, blue to symbolize the sky and vast universe, a triangle to signify the 3 gunas, an OM symbol, snakes in a heart formation to signify male and female union, and the white lotus of the Sahasrara chakra.
