Siddha Yoga is based on the Hindu spirituality of Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism. Originally, Siddha Yoga was mentioned in the 7th or 8th century AD. It can be translated from Sanskrit to mean perfect or perfected Yoga. Practices involved with Siddha Yoga include meditation, chanting, study of scriptural texts, Hatha Yoga, and teachings. The main focus is on discovering and developing awareness of our personal inner divinity.
Modern Siddha Yoga came about when Swami Muktananda, now deceased, explained the path of self-realization he encountered due to the guidance of Indian Bhagawan Nityananda. In the mid-seventies, Swami Muktananda created the SYDA Foundation. The official Siddha Yoga organization has ashrams and meditation centers around the globe, including India, USA, Australia, England and France. Many practitioners find it easier to study and grow within Siddha Yoga within these settings.
