September 4th 2009 14:04
Sivananda Yoga stems from Swami Shivananda's teachings and offers a synthesis of Bhakti, Karma, Raja, and Jnana Yoga. This system focuses on vitality and health of the body. The five main points of Sivananda Yoga are:
* Asana - actions/poses
* Pranayama - breathing exercises
* Savasana - relaxation
* Correct diet - vegetarian
* Meditation - Vedanta and Dhyana
Swami Vishnu-devananda brought Sivananda Yoga to the Western world when arriving in the US in the mid-late 1950's. The first Sivananda center was opened in 1959 in Montreal, Canada. There are currently multiple Sivananda Yoga centers and ashram retreats throughout the US and Europe. The overall aim of practice is the promotion of physical, mental, and spiritual well being. There are also many guides and manuals available in book format to help with home practice.
Classes generally commence with Savasana, Pranayama, and Surya Namaskar and are suited to people of various ages and abilities. The Yoga class is gentle and slow of pace. Although a complete practice may involve other Asana, there are 12 major poses practiced. These are:
*Headstand
*Shoulderstand
*Plow
*Fish
*Seated Forward Bend
*Cobra
*Locust
*Bow
*Seated Spinal Twist
*Crow
*Standing Forward Bend
*Triangle
