V1: The first verse can be taken in at least two ways as is evident from the two renderings of translation. The introductory sentence informs us either that instructions on being made whole or a discussion on Yoga follows. This may mean the same thing, dependant upon your definition and translation of the word YOGA.
V2: In one translation, we are informed that Yoga is ‘the restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff’. the other tells us that wholeness is the control over awareness and being. Once again, these are basically the same in meaning, if you consider how awareness is generally obtained.
V3: This key sentence brings harmony between the two texts - informing us that the one who sees, sees what really is or themselves through the glasses of reality.
V4: This verse tells us that when not seeing ourselves in reality, we see ourselves wrongly through mental aberrations, or due to movements of the mind that provide distortion.
Taking the initial 4 verses, we can learn the basic fact that sometimes we will see what really is, whilst at others mental aberrations will shadow, cloud, or distort the truth thereby giving us a wrong view. In verses one and two it appears to say that Yoga - such as is contained in the text - will assist us to see reality and learn to overcome mental malfunctioning.
