V16: A second level of non-attachment comes when you become aware of reality and thereby become detached from worldly matters.
I would like to add that as this is also a part of Buddhist practice, I have already begun to practice and experience this prior to reading Patanjali’s text. I would therefore like to share one of the practices I have personally found to be helpful at this stage.
If you can visualize the inside of your mind as having separate chambers - a bit like the physical heart’s four chambers - and try to establish an awareness inside your head of where the relevant energies are physically situated, it may help you. Then, when you have a feeling of craving towards an object, you can ‘feel’ this craving inside of your head at a certain place and this leads to recognizing that cravings arise THERE - so when anything else arises in that spot, you can analyze it and recognize it as craving.
I have included a diagram (not drawn to scale - sorry) of how this works in my own head, which you can use as reference if you are unsure of how to begin. It can be looked upon as similar to the chakras and inner pranic energy - as something you cannot see, but can be aware of.
I have found that mapping it out in this way helps me considerably when dealing with recognizing right/unwholesome mental movements. NB the diagram is drawn as if the ‘face’ is facing you.
