YOGA TEXTS: P.Y.S. 7

V17 & 18: These verses refer to two differing types of Samadhi/realization coming from meditation. The first is reasoning and reflecting in relation to self-reality; the other comes from the cessation of mental movements.
V19 & 20: One does not escape rebirth merely by internally changing to a higher mental level. Through devotion to wisdom and concentrated reflections the second type of Samadhi can be obtained.
V21-23: The stronger the faith and intention, the quicker the grasp of this style of Samadhi. Practice may fall into three categories - mild, medium, or intense. Total spiritual/godly dedication is also a possible practice strength.
V24: It is in these recent verses that the two translations are becoming most different. One translation appears to refer to the purity of a specific God, while the other explains that holy beings are experiencing ultimate reality rather than afflictions. In order to make the two versions relate, I would suggest using the approach of god and holy being meaning the inner divinity we can all access - or in my own terminology, the ‘know mind’ rather than the ‘think mind’.
