Different Styles: ANANDA YOGA

July 22nd 2008 17:42
The word 'Ananda' translates as bliss or happiness. Ananda yoga practice covers the areas of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and philosophy. It operates under the Hatha Yoga principles, being recognized as part of the Raja/Kriya Yoga traditions. This style of Yoga places a strong emphasis on both community and spiritual development. Ananda Yoga is currently practiced across the world.

Recognizing the energy of the Chakras, Ananda Yoga is less of an exercise workout than a practice designed to assist with inner development. Emphasis is placed of inner peace and harmony, leading to spiritual realization and consciousness. It originated from Swami Kriyananda, based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, (who wrote 'Autobiography of a Yogi') of whom Swami Kriyananda was a pupil/disciple

Different Styles: AGNI YOGA

July 16th 2008 16:53
The word Agni comes from the Sanskrit word for fire, relative to the cosmic creative fire, transformative energy, or love and creativity issued from the heart. Agni Yoga is reportedly currently popular in India, New York, and Moscow. It closely relates to the Vedas - one of the original sources referring to Yogic practice. Additionally, Agni refers to a Vedic deity located within the Rig Veda.

In 1920, the non-profit 'Agni Yoga Society' educational institution was founded by Nicholas and Helena Roerich. It is believed that a teaching was offered to this artist and his wife by Master Morya. There are strong connections to the Theosophical Society through the link to this master, who was also the guru of one founder of the T.S. The Agni Yoga society published a series of books explaining the belief and attitude of Agni Yoga, which combines both Eastern and Western, spiritual and scientific, religious and lifestyle ideas. Books offering the teachings were written from the year 1920 to 1941. The practice is study-based, with theory and lifestyle laid out in printed form for those interested

Different Styles: ANUSARA YOGA

July 3rd 2008 15:01
Anusara Yoga is a modern Yogic practice developed by John Friend a mere decade ago. Since 1997, this recently introduced style has reportedly spread rapidly across the Americas from Canada to Mexico, all around Europe, and also infiltrated Australia & Japan. Classes are now becoming available worldwide, with Anusara Yoga now one of the most popular styles of Yoga practiced today. For full details on this style of Yoga and practitioners near you, go to www.anusara.com.

Anusara refers to 'following your heart' or 'flowing gracefully' and comes from the text of the Kularnava Tantra. It is within the Hatha family of Yogic practices and combines internal Tantric philosophy with external alignment principles. Students of all abilities & levels are welcomed and accepted. Emphasis is placed on individuality and creativity, whilst appreciation is given to beauty, truth and divinity. Attitude, alignment and action are all paid attention. As with many forms of Yoga, Anusara practice is suitable for practitioners seeking to alleviate pain, stress, emotional blockages, and lack of purpose

Different Styles: ASHTANGA YOGA

June 25th 2008 14:50
The word Ashtanga comes from the '8 limbs' of Yoga mentioned in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which I have mentioned in a former section (Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi). However, the Yogic style labeled Ashtanga comes from Krishnamacarya and K. Pattabhi Jois' development of the Yoga Korunta, which explains a form of Hatha Yoga presented by Vamana Rishi. It is currently practiced, taught, and studied from its base at The Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in India. Classes are also available around the world following this style.

Both Asana forms used within the Ashtanga style of Yoga (Vinyasa & Tristhana) combine movement with breath. There are 6 stages of Asana for participants; these are covered by Yoga Chikitsa, Nadi Shodhana, & Sthira Bhaga. Focusing on inhaling and exhaling for the same duration, use of the Bandhas - mentioned in a former section at this site - and on breathing once per movement, makes the Asana/Pranayama combination different to other forms of Yoga. Another feature is that of Dristhi. This refers to one of nine focus points one concentrates upon whilst performing the Asanas

Different Styles: General

June 17th 2008 01:05
There are numerous forms of Yoga being practiced around the world today. Some have been handed down generation by generation, from teacher to pupil, originating in ancient Indian history. Yoga was first mentioned in the Vedas, some 2700 years ago, but was previously found 500 years prior to that in the form of stone seals portraying Yogic postures discovered in the Indus Valley. Other styles include those versions of Yoga especially adapted for the modern Western practitioner.

The majority of Yoga practices in the Western world follow the Hatha Yoga traditions, but it can be somewhat confusing when you first decide to practice - unless you have some friends already involved - as to which form of Yoga might be best for you. You may be more interested in finding the cheapest lessons, the most authentic Indian text, a genuine traditional and experienced teacher, just exercises, or the ultra modern Western woman DVD. There are not only different styles, schools, and formats to consider, but many variations within each
